Cercis canadensis – Eastern Redbud
Eastern Redbud is a small tree that only grows up to 15 feet tall, and often, the crown is widespread as it reaches for the sun. It is typically found growing on the edge of fields and as a landscape plant.
Redbud’s flowers are bunched around the branches where leaves and branches grow. The small flowers can grow in numbers to make the whole tree look purple. The flowers come out before the leaves, making them even more striking. The fruit resembles snap peas, which it is related to. The leaves are heart-shaped and about 3-4 inches wide.
Bloom Window
The peak bloom period is in early May, around the time of cherry blossoms and forsythia. I hear it can even bloom in other parts of the year. The flowers arrive before the leaves.
Where To Find It
It is found in the eastern US, sometimes in the woods, but mainly along the edges where it can get more sun. It is also grown as a landscape tree.
