Adams Lake Prairie State Nature Preserve is just a small prairie on the edge of Adams Lake in Adams County, Ohio, but what it lacks in size, it boasts in beauty. This prairie features rare wildflowers, sizeable oak population, as well Allegheny Mount Ants and rare Edwards Hairstreak Butterflies. The butterflies are attracted to the prairie wildflowers and the oak trees which their larvae need to feed on. The ants here, have a symbiotic relationship with these butterflies and their caterpillars. The caterpillars secrete a type of nectar, which the ants feed on, so in return, they protect the caterpillars from parasitic wasps with their powerful sting and ability to work together in their colony. These ants build giant mounds, some four feet tall, and over 20 years old. They can be aggressive toward humans, but as long as you don’t disturb their homes, they won’t bother you.

There are two trails here, one which traverses the prairie and one through the nearby oak forest. You access the preserve from the Adams Lake State Park.
