Date: 06/07/2021 – Distance: 1.8 mi – Elapsed Time: 1.0 hr – Ascent: 292 ft – Descent: 223 ft – Difficulty: Easy

This is the second post in a series (Campground) on my trip to Shenandoah National Park. I woke up early on the second day and did a short warm up hike around the immediate area of Big Meadows. I am joined later today for two hikes by two other hiking buddies, however I did this one alone early in the morning. I had heard about an overlook nearby, called Blackrock Summit, and my goal was to find it.

I began by heading toward the Big Meadows picnic area near the campground and toward the lodge.
The amphitheater is on the other side of the picnic area from the campground.
I’m guessing an animal was digging in this Chicken of the Woods.
White Campion.
I wanted to see the Appalachian Trail which runs along the west edge of the Big Meadows area.
This intersection must be the AT.
Yep, an iconic trail over 2100 miles long.
AT.
The trails here are marked by these signs at intersections.
After my short visit to the AT, I headed toward the lodge.
Big Meadows Lodge.
There are nice cabins as well.
I knew it was close to the lodge.
I wasn’t up for the full Lewis Falls Trail loop, but did the short little trail near bottom middle of the red loop.
Some deer were also out for a morning jaunt.
The summit is not far from the lodge, maybe less than a quarter mile.
And the view is incredible at 3721 feet.
It looks west over the Shenandoah Valley.
Wow, just a taste of this amazing park.
I returned toward the lodge, headed back to camp.
I took a different route back to camp.
Striped Maple.
Bulbous Buttercup.
Beautybush Tree.
