Date: 06/07/2021 – 06/09/2021 – Basecamp

Big Meadows is right in the middle of Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. It features a beautiful lodge with a restaurant and store, a campground, visitor center, gas station, cabins, and lots of trails. The Appalachian Trail passes through here as well. It sits atop the mountain ridge that spans the length of this long Park.

The campground is beautiful and the sites are not electric, but are nicely spaced with bushes between neighbors. There is a camp store which sells ice and wood. Showers are nice and warm, but require a $1.75 for 15 minutes of time. They do have a change machine as well.

    wow great pics. It is crazy but we have a mutual aquaintance that told me about your blog and I have been checking it out. Crazy as it sounds my son and I were backpacking, headed north on the AT, at the same time you and you friends were there. We started at Blackrock Summit and went north about 30 miles. We stopped at Big Meadows on the 7th or 8th, didn’t stay but got some well deserved snacks. I dig what you say about lagging behind, I do the same constantly trying to I.D. different sightings. It was a little hard on the AT for it seems I had to pay more attention to my footing than the beauty around me at times for fear of falling with 35 pounds on my back. Think I will go back to the Lewis mtn campground and do day hikes in the future. Love your blog. Peace and keep on trekking, Jamie
