Shawnee State Park is a 1093 acre park in the middle of the vast 63,000 acre Shawnee State Forest west of Portsmouth, Ohio. The campground sits between two lakes, Turkey Creek Lake and Roosevelt Lakes. It is hilly and the sites can be challenging for campers, especially RVs. Most of the sites are electric and they have hot showers.

I was using site #56 as a base camp for the weekend as I was hiking some nearby trails.

Site #56.
As you can see there is a hill on the front of the site, but I found a reasonable flat spot on the top left. You can see my packaged tent by the tree.
Looking further into the campground.
Getting the fire started. Gonna be in the low 40s.
Got the tent up.
Wider view of the site.
From the other direction.
And another angle.
Gonna burn this thing tonight. It’s been sitting off to the side of my woodpile since last fall.
It’s on.
I burned for 5 hours and this is what remained in the morning of the same trunk.
I decided to grab breakfast at the lodge.
It’s a nice lodge.
The entrance is spacious.
Built in 1979.
This large painting depicts the Shawnee scouting the settlers coming down the Ohio River from nearby bluffs.
This fox was grabbing breakfast at the lodge as well
Some of the fish in the two lakes.
The fox was mad because he had to wait and he didn’t want to wear a mask.
The neighborhood turkeys were there too.
They have a nice outdoor pool too.
This is the restaurant.
There are a few black bears in the area.
The view from the lodge.
I’ve hiked all of the state park trails.
I took my breakfast to enjoy at Turkey Creek Lake dam.
There is a nice summer wildflower garden here.
The newly rebuilt bridge into the campground.
Friday evening I did a short hike down to Roosevelt Lake.
It’s smaller than Turkey Creek Lake.
The beach. The shelter on the other side is accessed from the dam end of the lake.
There is a picnic shelter by the lake.
