Boord State Nature Preserve is a small preserve in Washington County northeast of Athens and features numerous wildflowers and a deep cut (80 feet) ravine, lined with Hemlock and a dramatic waterfall at it’s head. I hiked north from the small parking area on the one lane dirt road (Township Road 69) first into a white pine plantation. I was hiking along what seemed to be a basic preserve, when I encountered the ravine. Being a nature preserve, you should stay on trail, so I didn’t attempt to enter the ravine, but followed the trail along it’s southern rim. There are a few spots where you can peer through the Hemlock into the ravine and an observation deck where you can overlook the falls at the head of the ravine. A hunter I ran into(he said he had a permit), told me he saw a bobcat hunting a chipmunk earlier in the day in the ravine.

Trail map at the trailhead. Trail only covers a small portion of the total park, but you are required to stay on the trail. Think about rare species…
And of course, no pets allowed in the State Nature Preserves, due to rare species.
A few other rules too.
Start of the trail heading toward the pines.
The White Pines are tall.
And planted in rows.
White Pine cones.
White Pine can be identified by it’s clusters of 3 inch long slender needles.
Some of the ferns.
Young Hemlock Pine.
Indian Cucumber?
Turkey Tail fungus?
Looks like potato chips growing horizontally.
Cut Leave Grape Fern?
The sign says, “Habitat Restoration Area. Do Not Enter.”
The Hemlocks mark the ravine.
It’s deep and steep.
The trail skirts the southern top of the ravine.
The Hemlocks are big too.
Hard to see the cliffs but they’re there.
View from the falls overlook deck.
Would love to see it when the creek is raging.
Looking down the ravine from the deck.
The trail gets closer to the creek above the falls. There is no ravine up here.
It’s just a normal creek, until the falls.
Red Cedar?
Willow Oak?
