Date: 11/26/2020 – Distance: 2.0 mi – Elapsed Time: 2.0 hr – Ascent: 243 ft – Descent: 262 ft – Difficulty: Easy

Thanksgiving morning I travelled north to Cuyahoga Valley National Park between Cleveland and Akron for four days of hiking. My first stop was Brandywine Falls. I was here last year but only had time to visit the falls and was very impressed. This time I wanted to hike into the gorge for a closer look.

I first took the trail to the falls. Brandywine Creek is immediately visible.
The boardwalk goes to both the top and bottom of the falls.
It’s only a short hike to the falls from the parking lot.
I took the lower route which descends past the rocks which make up the cap of the falls.
You can see here that we are at the same elevation as the top of the falls.
I just wanted to see the falls, then I turned around. I would return.
The same rock layer is on the opposite wall as well.
At this point, I turned right on the Gorge Trail.
It’s really easy at first.
Toward the gorge.
The the trail begins to descend.
Stairs leading into the gorge.
The Gorge Trail goes right. Left takes you to the Stanton House toward the Boston Mills Visitor Center.
Trail continues on the other side.
Then you come to this bridge over Brandywine Creek.
The creek is beautiful.
On the other side of the bridge the trail turns right toward the falls.
It follows the creek for a bit.
Then begins going up.
This is the most difficult part of the hike.
Then you are back up on top.
You can see the falls in the distance.
At the bike trail the trail continues to the right.
Now I am opposite of the parking lot.
You can see the cap rock layer and the two boardwalk trails from here.
The falls are flowing more than last time I was here.
This bridge is right at the top of the falls.
Trail goes right off the bike trail just past the falls.
You can get right up to the falls here. The structure on the left is the ruins of an old power mill.
It’s kind of scary up here.
Such power and beauty.
Looking at the lower observation platform.
This is what remains of the old power plant.
You can see that it sat right at the top of the falls.
Brandywine Falls.
Look how small the people are.
There is a picture of the power plant on the right of this informational kiosk.
Cleaner shot of Brandywine Falls.
Wide angle shot.
It seems like squirrels are always eating.
Parking lot entrance. That white bridge is Brandywine Road and Interstate 271 runs underneath it, all right at the top of the falls.
