I left work on a Friday and arrived at the Caesar Creek State Park Campground at about an hour and twenty minutes later. Caesar Creek State Park is west of Wilmington, Ohio on SR 73 south of Columbus and north of Cincinnati off of I71. You have to take a few back roads to get to the campground which is at 9000 Center Rd, Wilmington, OH 45177 (google map link below). I was staying 2 nights and hiking Saturday and Sunday (thunderstorms permitting which I was tracking all week). It turned out to be a great weekend with temperatures at 90 in the sun but in the 70s in the woods. I did have to stop my hike short on Sunday right before a wicked wind storm moved in. I’ll say more about that in a later post.

There are 283 sites at the campground. The campsite I had (A-8) was in a newly renovated section of the campground. They had just completed a new showerhouse and upgraded the electric to 50 amp hookups. There was flushing toilets, grey water dumping station, and potable water within a short walk from my site. The parking pad was large enough for two cars and the site was big enough for 5 or 6 small tents. Plenty enough room for my hammock and 2 person tent.

There is also a boat ramp at the campground and dumping stations for the RVs, a small camp store which stocks wood and ice and a few other supplies, and an amphitheater for summer entertainment. There are camp hosts scattered throughout willing to help you with any advice or needs as well.

Caesar Creek State Park is a huge lake covering 3,741 acres. It features a huge gorge with a dam, lots of wooded ravines, a few limestone cliffs, a couple of waterfalls. The lake features a public beach, unlimited horsepower. There are numerous hiking trails, and also horseback and mountain bike trails. Lots of picnic areas around the lake and a few wildlife areas as well.

I spent the next two days hiking mostly around the southern half of the lake, as that is where most of the “features” that I like are. There are other areas, because of the size, which I didn’t even get to explore.

I did have an eminent thunderstorm thread on the last day and had to cut my hike a little short. I’m glad I did because the wind and dust storm was very strong. A dangerous time to be in the woods and one of the main reasons I always watch the weather if I have signal.
