20200125 – Tar Hollow State Park – Ross Hollow Trail

After camping in the State Park campground the night before, I walked just a short distance to the Ross Hollow Trailhead. I did this loop trail in a clockwise direction. It begins by ascending to a ridge. The ascent is fairly steep, climbing about 150 feet in a half mile. It then follows the ridge along the north side of Tar Hollow Road (although you can’t see the road because it’s on the other side of the ridge line). Where Tar Hollow Road intersects with North Ridge Road the trail turns north, still following the ridge on the east side of North Ridge Road (again the road is on the other side of the ridge line). The trail then turns east away from North Ridge Road and begins to descend into the ravine. The trail gets almost to the bottom of the ravine where it emerges into another wing of the campground where it soon ends back at the trailhead. The trail is characterized by heavy hardwood forest and a deep ravine.
