Location: Just west of Circleville, Ohio.

Calamus is a 19 acre kettle swamp formed as a hole caused by a large chunk of ice which broke away from a retreating glacier splashing into the mud during the last ice age. Ohio has many of these formations and most have been filled in with rotting vegetation, but some still exist, most notably Punderson Lake in northeast Ohio, which is the largest and still quite a lake. These places feature rare species of plants and the birds and salamanders like them as well. There is a short trail here, partly boardwalk, which meanders through the swamp.
