Locaton: Locking County, Ohio west of Toboso.
Blackhand Gorge gets its name from a large blackhand that was burned by Native Americans to signify the sacred place into the large Cliff face where the Licking River cuts through the sandstone gorge. Unfortunately, the hand was destroyed when they built the Ohio-Erie Canal in the mid 1800s. There are still remnants of the canal including a well preserved lock on the north side of the river. Notable other features are a railroad passage cut through the sandstone known as the “deep Cut” and a sandstone quarry in the same vicinity. During the early spring, this place also puts on a fantastic wildflower display. Along with several miles of naturebtrails there is also a 4.3 mile bike trail which runs along the old railroad bed along the river as well as a tunnel through the sandstone under where the black had was.
