20220801 – Lakeside Daisy State Nature Preserve

Date: 08/01/2022 – Distance: 0.6 mi – Elapsed Time: 0.5 hr – Ascent: 10 ft – Descent: 7 ft – Difficulty: Very Easy

Situated on 136 protected acres on the Marblehead peninsula in an old quarry is Lakeside Daisy State Nature Preserve. The park protects one of the only populations of Lakeside Daisy’s anywhere else. It is an endangered species and prefers the barren limestone habitat which is typical of this location. The flowers bloom in May and I was too late for those (I will be back), but it was interesting to see this location and there were other things to see as well.

The entrance is on Alexander Pike.
Parking is limited but this place isn’t popolar.
About the preserve.
There is a short trail through a relatively barren landscape.
Another rare species found here is the Narrow-Leaved Summer Bluets.
Blazing Star also thrives here.
I saw a deer.
The ground is hard packed limestone.
There is also a wetland here.
This may be the Lakeside Daisy, but I couldn’t tell for sure.
Birds also like this landscape.
Blazing Star.
It’s like a desert here.
Some type of milkweed.
Please stay on the trails to protect the delicate landscape.
Gray Dogwood, I believe.
Eastern Red Cedar loves these barren landscapes as well.
The trail is short, but there is a bench to meditate on.
