The Cedar Falls Trail is part of the Edge of Appalachia Preserve System. It is managed by The Nature Conservancy and the Cincinnati Museum Center. I’ve been working my way through this trail system over the last few weeks and they are all great. It is an out and back hike to a beautiful waterfall with some great things to see along the way.

Entrance signage.
There is some history right at the parking lot entrance.
Always check the other side of signs.
This old furnace used to create iron for pots and pans, and even did some defense work during the War of 1812.
An educational kiosk gives some history.
The house across the road used to house workers.
Map of the trail to the falls. The hike was a little over a mile and a half one way.
Some more history about the area.
A bigger map of the Edge of Appalacia Preserve System.
Heading into the trail. It was raining a little.
Some more info about this trail.
A large Eastern Red Cedar Grove near the start of the trail.
There are some good ravines on this trail.
Looking up this ravine, there are cliffs on both sides.
These rubber mats are not a good solution to the mud as they get really slippery. It’s raining quite hard now.
There are wildflowers everywhere.
They grow right on the rocks too.
Toadshade Trillium.
This sign clued me into some of the special flowers here.
Miterwort aka Bishops Cap.
There is a nice overlook at the falls.
Cedar Falls.
Arborvitae aka Eastern White Cedar.
A closer look at the falls. That rock on the lower part of the pic fell in 1997.
I still don’t know what this is. It’s not Bluebells or Shooting Star.
Wood Vetch.
Wild Ginger.
Large Flowered Bellwort.
Better pic of Wood Vetch.
The flower of the Wild Ginger is really hard to see as it is really close to the ground.
This Columbine was hard to photograph.
Some type of mint.
Walking Fern.
This is what happens when you hike in the rain. Well worth it.

  1. My father James Nance used to camp out under that ledge and eat creek chubs back in the 60s. He would walk there from his father’s farm, Oscar Nance, on the white oak road. We made a lot of treks to this site back when I was a kid. The last time was in 97 after the flood. Water reached 50 ft up the banks. There are as a 10 ft x 6 ft tall rock in the creek about 50 yards up from the falls that had Indian carvings all over it. The storm swept it away. We never ventured below the falls but I’m sure it’s down there somewhere. We will be making our way up there threw the creek in search of that stone soon.

    1. Nice. Thanks for reading.

  2. Prowled around in the creek by the parking lot and found a very out of place elongated orange ‘rock’. Suspecting iron oxide, I took it home and wire wheeled/sandblasted it. Perfectly preserved run of iron from one of the pigs I’m sure. Showed evidence of the sand mold on the bottom and oxidation bubbles on the top. Broken on either end. Like a run of wax from a candle, there it was, after 180 years or so.
