Date: 10/11/2020 – Very Short Walk

The Big Muskie bucket is a gigantic scoop shovel which is all that is left of the largest shovel ever built. The machine stood 240 feet tall or 22 stories, and could haul 325 tons of rock in a single scoop. The land it sits on was a huge strip mine between 1969 and 1991 when mining ceased in the area. They created Miner’s Memorial Park to showcase the operation and to pay homage to the workers and the reclamation project which took place to try to return the land to nature. The 58,800 acres of land is now known as the AEP ReCreation Land and is open to the public for all sorts of recreation.
