My first day of a long weekend in Tar Hollow State Park, I arrived in the evening on a Thursday. I had Friday off in observation of Independence Day, and I had also taken off the following Monday, so in total, I was here for 5 days and four nights. The first night I just setup camp below the Pine Lake Dam in a primitive campground in the State Park called the Pine Lake Area. There are more RV friendly sights north of Pine Lake called the Logan Hollow and Ross Hollow Areas with electric hookups. There are about 10 sites total in this area below the dam and they are very spacious and shaded.
Tar Hollow State Park is contained within the larger 16,000 acre State Forest. It is just south of a town called Laurelville, Ohio, about half way between Chillicothe and Hocking Hills. The area is in the middle of a State Forest and there are lots of woods and hills. There is a 20 mile backpacking trail complete with a 5 site backpacking campground, which is divided into a North and South loop called the Logan Trail. There are also numerous bridle trails in the southern part of the forest, with it’s own camp area, and a few other trails in the State Park area. I had done both the Ross Hollow and Homestead Trails before when I camped here back in the second week of January. This time I had my sights set on the backpacking trail. However this first night, I just did some fishing in Pine Lake.
I didn’t fish very long, but I didn’t catch any fish the first night, but some other anglers told me they caught bluegill, bass, and catfish.
