After my first hike earlier in the day, I returned to camp and refueled and took a short rest under a tree in my hammock. With several hours left in the day, it was getting too hot at the campsite and I decided to return to the woods. This time I drove west past the dam, south of the lake on Clarksville Rd, to Middleton Road, then left on Corwin Road, to Caesar Creek Gorge State Nature Preserve.

This park has a mix of flat forest on top of the ridge, and deep ravine with some cliffs where Caesar Creek flows through it.

Trailhead is on the north end of the parking lot.
It doesn’t take long to arrive at the creek.

The initial section of the trail is uphill.
Fork to the left goes into the gorge while straight goes to the top ridge area.
Trails at the top ridge area are reclaimed farmland with wide mowed crass trails.
Pawpaw fruit.
A fork right on the gorge side descends into the gorge.
This doe had a fawn following her.
The gorge trail follows along the creek back toward the parking area. There are numerous access paths to the water.
Wild Petunia.
Decent sized cliff on the other side.
The river is mostly shallow and very clear.
Bulbous Bittercress.
This black snake was sunning on the trail. He wasn’t happy when I kept following him as he tried to slither away. He kept raising his head and “rattling” his trail like black snakes do.
