My mom and dad told me about this waterfall in Knox County just east of Mount Vernon. They didn’t know the name, but I finally found it. Honey Run Falls is just across the road from Honey Run Highlands Park on Hazel Dell Road, south of US 62, just south of Millwood. The waterfall is amazing with a very scenic gorge and flows into the Kokosing River nearby. Across the road is a larger park, with miles of trails. I only hiked about half of the trails and they just kept going on and on, but I was running out of daylight and had about an hour drive home.
Sign on Hazel Dell Road next to the parking lot.
I began first by crossing the road to see the falls.
Immediately you enter a gorge.
The Sharp Lobed Hepatica were still blooming here.
The waterfall is just a short hike from the road.
Honey Run Waterfall
There is a short trail which follows the gorge/creek to the Kokosing River.
There’s cliffs on both sides.
Yellow Trout Lily and Spring Beauty
Kokosing River
Kokosing River looking upstream.
Looking back toward the waterfall.
From the Kokosing River side, I climbed this scree.
There was a strange bowl formation surrounded by cliffs. Looked like an old quarry maybe.
On the other side of the “quarry” I was looking toward the falls again.
Looking toward the parking lot.
More Trout Lily’s.
Back at the parking lot, I took the trail into the “Highlands” part of the park.
There’s a lot of prairie up here.
Some young planted oak trees.
I made a right here, but could have kept going down the hill and deeper into this park.
This oak was gigantic.
I took a left here which passed by a private house, then continued west toward a parking lot off of US62. I turned around though and came back to this intersection.
I turned around here.
There’s a beautiful view from this bench.
The straight trail goes toward the parking lot off of US 62. I went right.
Another bench with a beautiful view.
On my way home, I found the other parking lot off US 62.
