This trail begins just east of the dam for Pine Lake. You can park at the dam and the trailhead is just on the other side of the primitive campground there. This trail is characterized by following a creek along both sides as it loops back to where it started. There are a few small bridges, and one water crossing which was fairly deep (about 6 inches) since it had been raining recently. There was also a few muddy areas. It’s not a very long trail and there are only a few small ascents. There are a few large stands of pitch pines for which this park is named after the historical harvesting of their sap/tar. The trail also follows along the south side of Tar Hollow Road almost making it to the main park entrance before turning back at the creek crossing. I never found a “homestead” if there even is one.
