On my last day in Tar Hollow State Park, I decided to stop by a nearby nature preserve before heading home. Metahqua Nature Preserve is run by the Ross County Parks. It’s an old farm which was donated to the parks and has some nice ravines, a man-made pond, and some spectacular views of the surrounding hills. Parking is along Walnut Creek Road. There is also a meadow trail on the south side of the road which circles some fields and traverses along Walnut Creek. There is also a wetland area here. The main trailhead is opposite side of the road from parking. The Paw Paw Trail ascends to a ridge where there is a pond on top. There is another trail which begins at the pond called the Gobbler’s Knob. I did not take that trail but supposedly it has a steep ascent to a knob. There is also a nice little pair of benches at the pond where you can contemplate the beautiful scenery. Pay attention to the red blazes to stay on the Paw Paw Trail as there is a maintenance trail which frequently comes close and it would be easy to get sidetracked on that.
