The Towpath Trail along the Cuyahoga River goes the length of this wonderful park. It is the towpath for the old Erie Canal. There are several locks still remaining, and some of the northern part of the canal still has water in it. I wanted to check out this trail while I was here, so I decided to start in the middle, at Lock 29 in the town of Peninsula and follow the trail south to a place called Deep Lock Quarry.
Lock 29 is a unique lock, in that it actually crossed the Cuyahoga River on an aqueduct. North of the lock, the canal was on the east side of the river. At the river, the boats entered the lock, which raised them 11 feet up and crossed over the river on a bridge which contained the canal to cross over the river. South of the lock, the canal is on the west side of the river.
The Deep Lock Quarry Trailhead is right near Lock 28.
There is a short paved trail before forking off to the right and up the hill into the quarry area. There are many remnants of the active quarry still around.
Beyond the big quarry the trail continues from the top of the “steps” further into the quarry area, then loops back around to the same path we came in on.
